What Counts as a Channel in a Social Scheduler

A channel is usually one connected social account, but only Buffer and Publer define it that way. Later sells a social set of eight profiles, Hootsuite sells seats with an account cap, and Metricool sells brands. Here is what each billing unit actually covers, taken from the vendors' own pricing pages as checked on October 10, 2026.

What Counts as a Channel in a Social Scheduler

A channel in a social scheduling tool is normally one connected social account: one Instagram profile, one Facebook page, one LinkedIn page. That is the definition Buffer publishes, and Publer counts the same way. But the word is not an industry standard. Later bundles one profile from each supported network into a social set and sells the set. Hootsuite sells user seats and caps how many accounts the account can hold. Metricool sells brands. The unit decides your bill far more than the feature list does, so this guide reads six pricing pages and states exactly what each unit buys, as checked on October 10, 2026.

Buffer and Publer both bill one connected account at a time

Buffer's pricing page gives the clearest definition on the market. A channel is "one social account you connect to Buffer - a single Instagram profile, Facebook page, LinkedIn page, TikTok account, and so on."

The same page states the consequence plainly: "you pay per channel rather than per brand or per client." Essentials is listed at $5 per month per channel, or $60 billed yearly. Team is $10 per channel, or $120 yearly.

Volume changes the rate rather than the count. The page says "channels 1-10 are priced at the standard rate, and any channels above 10 cost less per channel," without publishing the reduced figure.

Publer uses the phrase social account and spells out the arithmetic on the page: "2 Facebook pages and 2 Instagram accounts count as 4 social accounts." Professional is $5.00 per month, or $4.00 per month billed yearly. Business is $10.00, or $8.00 billed yearly.

Publer discounts volume as a free unit rather than a lower rate: "For every 9 social accounts, the 10th one is free." Its FAQ works the example through, noting that 20 accounts means paying for 18. Team members follow the same rule.

Both vendors keep seats and accounts apart. Buffer's Free and Essentials plans list one user; Team lists unlimited team members. Publer prices additional members on their own slider. The full tier-by-tier arithmetic sits in our comparison of Publer and Buffer paid tiers.

Later sells a bundle of eight profiles, not a single channel

Later's unit is the social set, which its pricing page defines as one profile from each of its supported platforms: Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube and Snapchat. One set therefore covers up to eight profiles, one per network.

Starter includes 1 social set and 1 user at $18.75 per month billed yearly. Growth includes 2 sets and 2 users at $37.50. Scale includes 6 sets and 4 users at $82.50. There is no permanently free tier; the page offers a 14-day trial.

The bundle helps a single brand that posts everywhere and hurts anyone with two accounts on one network. A business with three Instagram profiles and nothing else needs three social sets.

That buys 24 profile slots to use three, by our arithmetic on the October 2026 page. Buffer would charge for three channels instead, which is $15 per month on Essentials.

Later also meters posts inside the unit: 30 per profile per month on Starter, 180 on Growth, unlimited on Scale, per the pricing page as of October 10, 2026. Free-tier differences across these tools are set out in Buffer versus Later versus Hootsuite.

Hootsuite charges by seat and caps accounts separately

Hootsuite publishes a definition too: "Social accounts are profiles on social media (such as an Instagram account, your personal X account, or a Facebook Page)." But accounts are a cap, not the billing unit. The price is per user seat.

Standard is $99 per user per month billed annually and allows up to 10 social accounts. Professional is $199 and lifts the cap to unlimited accounts. Advanced is $399. The comparison table lists user seats as "1+" on all three, bought as needed.

That means two people sharing ten accounts on Standard pay $198 per month, while one person managing ten accounts pays $99. The account cap never moves the price inside a tier; headcount does.

Metricool and Sprout Social show the two extremes

Metricool bills brands. Starter covers up to 5 brands at $20 per month on annual billing, or $25 billed monthly, and the pricing page states no seat limit on the tier. Advanced starts at $53 per month for up to 15 brands.

Sprout Social bills seats and bundles profiles into them. Essentials is $79 per seat per month billed annually, or $99 billed monthly, and each seat includes 5 social profiles. Professional at $299 per seat lifts profiles to unlimited.

The two models diverge fast. An agency with twelve clients and three staff pays Metricool on brand count and Sprout on headcount, a gap we work through in Metricool versus Sprout Social pricing.

Check these five things before you count anything

  • Does one network profile equal one billable unit, or does the tool bundle several networks into one unit, as Later does with social sets?
  • Are seats included in the unit price or sold separately? Buffer Team includes unlimited members; Hootsuite and Sprout charge per seat.
  • Is there a per-unit post quota on top of the price? Later caps 30 posts per profile per month on Starter; Publer caps scheduled posts to 10 per account on Free.
  • Which networks the unit excludes. Publer's free plan cannot connect X at all; Metricool's free plan excludes LinkedIn and X.
  • Whether volume changes the rate, the count, or neither: Buffer lowers the rate above ten channels, Publer gives every tenth unit free, Hootsuite lifts the account cap at $199 per seat.

Design tools and automation tools count nothing like this

Canva, which many teams use to make the posts, has no channel concept at all. Its pricing page bills by person: Pro at US$144 per year for one person, Business at US$250 per year per person, as read on October 10, 2026.

The "Schedule social content across platforms" row in Canva's comparison table is marked unavailable on Free and included on Pro, with no number of destinations given. The paid-tier detail is laid out in Canva Free versus Pro for social posts.

Automation platforms meter runs instead. Zapier counts tasks, Make counts operations and n8n counts workflow executions, which is why a single scheduling workflow can cost nothing on one platform and hundreds on another. See Zapier tasks versus Make credits versus n8n executions.

Self-hosting removes the meter but adds a server bill, the trade-off set out in n8n Cloud versus self-hosted. Either way, the networks themselves impose publishing caps no plan can raise, as covered in what Instagram and TikTok API limits mean.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Facebook page and an Instagram profile one channel or two?

Two. Buffer counts each connected social account as one channel, and Publer's pricing page states that two Facebook pages and two Instagram accounts count as four social accounts. Later is the exception: both fit inside one social set.

How much does ten channels cost on Buffer?

Essentials is listed at $5 per channel per month, so ten channels is $50 per month, or $600 billed yearly. The page states channels above ten cost less per channel but does not publish the discounted rate, as of October 10, 2026.

Does paying for more channels add team members?

Not usually. Buffer lists one user on Free and Essentials and unlimited members on Team at $10 per channel. Publer sells additional members as a separate quantity. Hootsuite and Sprout Social bill per seat from the start.

Which model is cheapest for an agency?

Brand-count pricing, in most cases. Metricool Advanced covers up to 15 brands at $53 per month on annual billing with no stated seat cap, while seat-priced tools multiply by headcount from $79 to $399 per person per month.

Can I schedule to two Instagram accounts on one Later plan?

Only by buying a second social set. A set is one profile per supported platform, so a second Instagram profile needs another set. Growth includes two sets at $37.50 per month billed yearly, per the pricing page as of October 2026.

Bottom line

Count your own accounts, people and networks before reading any price. One connected account equals one unit at Buffer and Publer, one bundle of eight networks at Later, a capped resource at Hootsuite, and a client folder at Metricool.

Then multiply by the thing you have most of. All figures here reflect the vendors' pricing pages on October 10, 2026, and exclude tax; every vendor on this list can change tiers without notice.
