What a Unified Social Inbox Actually Costs

The price of a unified social inbox ranges from zero to $399 per person per month, and the range is honest rather than arbitrary: the tools are answering different things. Buffer includes a community inbox on every plan, including the free one, but describes it in terms of comments. Hootsuite puts replies on its $99 entry tier and message routing on its $399 tier. Sprout Social reserves a consolidated inbox for Standard at $199 per seat. Metricool folds an inbox into every paid brand plan from $20 a month. Publer's pricing page lists no inbox product. Here is what each one includes, with the tier it sits on, as checked on October 10, 2026.

Buffer gives replies away, but the unit is the comment

Buffer lists "Community inbox" on Free, Essentials and Team. The feature table confirms "Reply to comments" as included on all three tiers, across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, X, TikTok, Google Business Profile, YouTube and Mastodon.

Two rows are metered instead of gated. AI replies are "5 suggestions per week" on Free and unlimited on both paid tiers. Saved replies are "1 saved reply" on Free and unlimited on paid. Comment insights and comment score are included everywhere.

The caveat is scope. Every row in Buffer's Community section is written about comments, and the page lists no direct message row. Treat it as comment management rather than a customer care desk.

Price-wise that makes the entry cost $0 for three channels, or $5 per channel per month on Essentials. The rest of that comparison sits in Publer versus Buffer paid tiers.

Metricool bundles an inbox into every paid brand plan

Metricool's inbox row is marked for its paid tiers, starting with Starter at $20 per month billed annually, or $25 monthly, for up to five brands. Advanced starts at $53 per month for up to fifteen brands.

The listed coverage is wide for the price: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Google Business Profile and LinkedIn. X messaging is the exception and requires an add-on, per the pricing page as of October 10, 2026.

Because Metricool prices brands rather than seats, the inbox cost does not multiply by headcount. For an agency with several clients and a small team, that is the cheapest route to a shared inbox we found on a published page.

Later puts conversations one tier above its entry plan

Later's social inbox appears on Growth and Scale, not on Starter. Growth is $37.50 per month billed yearly and includes 2 social sets and 2 users; Starter is $18.75 with 1 set and 1 user.

So the inbox effectively costs a doubling of the bill. The listed scope covers Instagram DMs, comments and post mentions, Facebook messages and comments, and TikTok comments, which is broader than comment-only tools.

Remember Later's unit as well: a social set is one profile per supported network, so two Instagram accounts need two sets. That mechanic is explained in what counts as a channel in a social scheduler.

Hootsuite prices inbox depth in three steps

  • Standard, $99 per user per month billed annually: "Respond to messages from one inbox," with the FAQ calling it a unified inbox, and a cap of 10 social accounts.
  • Professional, $199 per user per month: "Automate inbox replies and workflows," plus unlimited social accounts.
  • Advanced, $399 per user per month: "Assign and auto-route messages to the right team members," with skill-based routing, teammate collaboration in the inbox, satisfaction surveys and team productivity tracking.
  • Enterprise, custom: "advanced inbox capabilities, team productivity reporting, Salesforce integration, and more tools for managing customer conversations at scale."

The jump is steep because it is a seat price. A three-person care team on Advanced is $1,197 per month, or $14,364 a year by our arithmetic from the October 2026 page, before any add-ons.

What you buy at that level is workflow, not reach: assignment, routing and reporting on who answered what. If one person answers everything, Standard at $99 does the same job of consolidating messages.

Sprout Social holds the inbox for its middle tier

Sprout's Essentials tier is $79 per seat per month billed annually, or $99 billed monthly, with 5 social profiles per seat. The consolidated inbox and collaboration tools are listed from Standard at $199 per seat.

Advanced at $399 per seat adds "Sentiment in the Smart Inbox and Reviews." Professional at $299 sits between them and lifts profiles to unlimited. Enterprise is quote-only.

Three add-ons appear on the page, Social Insights, Employee Advocacy and Professional Services, available on Standard and up. None of their prices are published, so a care budget cannot be finalised from the pricing page alone.

For a team of three on Standard that is $597 per month, or $7,164 a year. The brand-versus-seat arithmetic behind that figure is worked through in Metricool versus Sprout Social pricing.

Publer sells scheduling, not replies

Publer's pricing page lists no inbox or unified inbox product on any tier, including Business at $10 per social account per month. Its reply-adjacent features are AI prompts and first-comment scheduling.

That is a legitimate design choice at the price, not an oversight to assume away. If you need replies in the same tool, the published options are Buffer for comments or Metricool for messages.

Check these six things before you pay for an inbox

  • Comments or direct messages? Buffer's rows describe comments; Later and Metricool list DMs explicitly.
  • Which networks, and which ones cost extra. Metricool puts X messaging behind an add-on.
  • Does the price multiply by people or by brands? Hootsuite and Sprout bill per seat; Metricool bills per brand.
  • Do you need assignment and routing, or just one queue? That is the $99 against $399 question on Hootsuite.
  • Are reviews and app-store or Google Business replies included, since several tools treat reviews separately from social messages.
  • Whether the inbox can see history, because per-network API rules govern what a tool may fetch, as covered in what Instagram and TikTok API limits mean.

One more practical note: free scheduling tiers rarely include any reply surface, which is why teams end up paying for two products. The entry tiers are compared in Buffer versus Later versus Hootsuite.

Building a reply queue yourself is possible but meters differently, per run rather than per seat, as in Zapier tasks versus Make credits versus n8n executions. Self-hosting shifts the cost to a server, as in n8n Cloud versus self-hosted.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free social inbox?

Yes, on Buffer. The community inbox is listed on the free plan alongside three channels, with 5 AI reply suggestions per week and 1 saved reply. The rows describe comment replies rather than direct messages.

What is the cheapest paid tool with a unified inbox?

Metricool Starter, at $20 per month billed annually or $25 monthly for up to five brands, with inbox support listed for Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Google Business Profile and LinkedIn. X messaging needs an add-on.

How much is Hootsuite's inbox with message routing?

The Advanced plan at $399 per user per month billed annually, which adds assignment, skill-based routing, satisfaction surveys and productivity tracking. Standard at $99 per user per month includes replying from one inbox without routing.

Which Sprout Social plan has the Smart Inbox?

Consolidated inbox and collaboration tools are listed from Standard at $199 per seat per month on annual billing. Sentiment inside the Smart Inbox appears only on Advanced at $399 per seat, as of October 2026.

Does Publer have an inbox?

Not on its pricing page. Publer lists scheduling, analytics and AI features up to Business at $10 per social account per month, with no inbox or unified inbox row on any tier as of October 10, 2026.

Why does inbox pricing vary so much?

Because the billing unit changes. A comment reply surface can be bundled free, while routed customer care is sold per seat at $199 to $399 a month, where the value is workflow and reporting rather than access.

Bottom line

If you reply to comments, Buffer does it at $0 and you should not pay more. If you handle direct messages for a handful of brands, Metricool at $20 a month is the cheapest published route.

Per-seat care platforms earn their price only when several people share a queue and you need routing and reporting. All figures come from the vendors' pricing pages on October 10, 2026 and exclude tax; multi-seat totals are our arithmetic.
