What Counts as a Seat in Social Media Tools

A seat is one named login, but only Hootsuite and Sprout Social make it the thing you pay for. Buffer gives unlimited members on its Team plan, Later caps users inside each tier, Publer sells extra members on a slider and Metricool publishes no seat count at all. Figures read on October 11, 2026.

What Counts as a Seat in Social Media Tools

A seat is one named person with their own login. Whether that costs anything depends entirely on the vendor. Hootsuite and Sprout Social multiply their whole price by headcount, so a second person doubles the bill.

Buffer's Team plan lists unlimited team members and charges by connected channel instead. Later includes a fixed number of users per tier. Publer sells additional members as a separate quantity. Metricool does not publish a seat count for any tier.

This guide reads the six pricing pages and states what a seat buys on each, as checked on October 11, 2026.

Hootsuite and Sprout Social bill headcount first

Hootsuite's FAQ states the model without hedging: "Hootsuite plans are sold per user (or 'seat'), so you can add as many users as your organization needs. Simply purchase additional seats for each team member who needs access."

The published rates are $99, $199 and $399 per user per month on annual billing, with tax excluded. Its comparison table lists user seats as "1+" on Standard, Professional and Advanced, and "Custom" on Enterprise.

Sprout Social uses the same unit across four tiers: Essentials at $79 per seat per month, Standard at $199, Professional at $299 and Advanced at $399, all on annual billing. Essentials also publishes a monthly rate of $99 per seat.

Sprout attaches a consumable to the seat as well. Its plan overview lists "Monthly AI agent credits per seat" at 100 on all four tiers, so AI usage scales with people rather than with posting volume.

Social accounts are a separate cap, not the same thing

Hootsuite's FAQ keeps the two apart with an example: on the Standard plan "you could manage up to 10 different accounts from one dashboard - for example, five Facebook pages and five Instagram profiles. You can share access to these accounts by adding team members."

So the cap and the price move independently. One person on Hootsuite Standard managing ten accounts pays $99 per month. Two people sharing the same ten accounts pay $198. The accounts never change the per-seat figure.

Sprout works the same way with profiles: 5 on Essentials and Standard, unlimited on Professional and Advanced. The two caps interact badly for small teams with many profiles, which is the case we work through in Sprout Social against Hootsuite on price.

Buffer gives seats away and charges for channels

Buffer's billing unit is the channel, defined on its page as "one social account you connect to Buffer". Essentials is $5 per channel per month, or $60 per channel billed yearly. Team is $10 per channel, or $120 yearly.

People are a plan feature rather than a line item. Free lists 1 user account, Essentials lists 1 user account, and Team lists "Unlimited team members". Adding a fifth colleague to Team changes nothing on the invoice.

That makes Buffer Team the cheapest published route for a large group sharing a small number of accounts. Five channels on Team is $50 per month by our arithmetic on the October 11, 2026 page, regardless of how many people log in.

Later and Publer cap or meter people inside the plan

Later includes users in the tier rather than selling them. Starter is 1 social set and 1 user at $18.75 per month on annual billing. Growth is 2 sets and 2 users at $37.50. Scale is 6 sets and 4 users at $82.50.

A fifth person therefore means a tier change, not a seat purchase. Later's page does not publish a per-user add-on price for any plan, as read on October 11, 2026.

Publer puts members on their own slider and explains why: "Select the number of additional members if you're managing social accounts as a team and would like collaboration and approval workflows."

Two details matter there. The page states "As the plan owner, you are already included in the price and don't count toward this limit." The free plan allows 1 user.

Publer also discounts member volume as a free unit rather than a lower rate: "For every 9 additional members, the 10th one is free." The same rule applies to its social accounts.

Metricool publishes no seat count at all

Metricool's pricing page is built around brands, not people. Free covers 1 brand. Starter covers up to 5 brands at $20 per month on annual billing, or up to 10 brands at $36. Advanced starts at $53 and reaches 50 brands.

No tier states a number of users. The page lists "Team and client management" and "Role management" as Advanced features, which implies multiple logins without quantifying them. Treat the seat count as a question for sales rather than a published figure.

What a four-person team actually pays

Take four people managing ten social accounts for one business. The following monthly totals are our arithmetic from the published annual rates on October 11, 2026, before tax, and ignore feature differences entirely.

  • Hootsuite Standard: 4 seats at $99 equals $396 per month, with the account cap at 10.
  • Sprout Social Standard: 4 seats at $199 equals $796 per month, with 5 profiles included.
  • Sprout Social Essentials: 4 seats at $79 equals $316 per month, with 5 profiles included.
  • Buffer Team: 10 channels at $10 equals $100 per month, unlimited members.
  • Later Scale: $82.50 per month, which is the first tier that includes 4 users.
  • Metricool Advanced: from $53 per month, with no published seat count to verify.

The spread between $100 and $796 is a billing unit, not a quality gap. Which unit suits you depends on whether you have more people or more accounts, the same split we describe in how to read a social media tool pricing page.

Four questions to ask about seats

  • Does a second login change the price, or only the permissions?
  • Are approvals tied to seats, as on Publer, or to a tier, as on Hootsuite Advanced? See which plans include approval workflows.
  • Do read-only reviewers and clients need paid seats, or do they get a share link?
  • Does anything else meter per seat, such as Sprout's 100 monthly AI agent credits per seat?
  • Will the extra seats actually raise your posting volume, or will platform caps stop you first? See LinkedIn and X API limits for schedulers.

Frequently asked questions

Is a seat the same as a social account?

No. A seat is a person; a social account is a connected profile. Hootsuite Standard is $99 per user per month and separately caps social accounts at 10, so the two numbers move independently.

Which social media tool is cheapest for a big team?

Buffer Team, on published rates. It charges $10 per channel per month and lists unlimited team members, so ten channels is $100 per month whether two people or twenty log in.

Can I add one extra user to Later?

Later's pricing page does not publish a per-user add-on. Users come fixed with the tier: 1 on Starter at $18.75 per month, 2 on Growth at $37.50 and 4 on Scale at $82.50, all on annual billing.

Does Publer charge for the account owner?

No. The pricing page states that as the plan owner you are already included in the price and do not count toward the additional members limit, and that every tenth additional member is free.

How many users does Metricool allow?

The pricing page does not publish a figure for any tier as of October 11, 2026. It lists team and client management plus role management on Advanced, which starts at $53 per month on annual billing.

Is there a minimum number of seats?

None of the six pages read published a seat minimum. Hootsuite lists user seats as 1+ on every paid tier and Sprout sells per seat from one, so a single-person account is possible on both.

Bottom line

Count your people and your accounts separately, then buy the tool whose unit matches the smaller number. Seat-priced tools punish headcount; channel-priced and brand-priced tools punish breadth.

Free tiers follow the same logic and are compared in Buffer versus Later versus Hootsuite free plans. Teams that script their own posting meter runs instead, as in n8n Cloud versus self-hosted.

All figures reflect the vendors' pricing pages on October 11, 2026, exclude tax, and can change without notice.
